Why I Teach - Maire Rose

Through her yoga practice, Maire Rose discovered a way to navigate life’s challenges and loves that teaching allows her to share those practices with others.

“I know I’ve gotten in my own way in the past - I sometimes still do - and yoga has given me a way to notice what’s coming up and the necessary tools to navigate around or through it. I’ve seen the philosophy of yoga, meditation and the physical practice help so many people that it’s really a gift to be able to share them with others through teaching.”

Maire Rose believes authenticity is the key to good teaching.

“One of my mentors Dana Flynn used to say we should teach people, not poses. It’s important to see people as individuals and modify the practice to give people permission to be in their own bodies instead of having to pretend they’re in a specific type of body.”

With the boom in yoga and the proliferation of yoga pose selfies, Maire Rose also wants her students to know humility is key.

“You don’t have to be able to do every pose, you just have to be able to show up honestly and teach from your experience. Yoga isn’t about advancing up a ladder; it’s about trying to show up presently in the moment - some days the poses will show up and some days they won’t. At the end of the day, we’re all going through the same thing, the same dance. That’s yoga - integration and wholeness - so if I can help or be a part of more integration among humans, that’s important."
